More Film is Art at 34th CIFF

exhjbit.jpg

The Exhibit (La Muestra)

Antonio, 80years old & once a respected scuplture artist, now spends too much time alone in his studio, or so his wife thinks.  He receives a phone call from a friend inviting him to his opening, where Antonio wonders about possibly exhibiting again.  He starts to make the necessary phone calls, but as one friend tells him, “Your time was another time.”  Meanwhile, his wife, 2 sons, and a granddaughter leads a crusade to make Anotnio an exhibition.  “No” is just not an acceptable answer.  Will their hard work pay off and finally give Antonio the much needed boost in an exhibition?

The Exhibition plays Friday, March 19, 2010 at 2:35PM and Monday, March 22, 2010 at 7:40PM.

Tickets are now on sale for everyone at the CIFF website.

More Film is Art

Desert of Forbidden Art

Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 7:30PM, Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 9:30AM, and Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 11:50AM.  Tickets are available now on the CIFF website for members.  Ticket sales will open up Friday, March 5, 2010 at 11am for all others.

This documentary looks at one visionary’s exhaustive campaign to preserve prohibited Soviet artworks by stashing them in the desert.  1,700 miles from the eyes of the KGB, Igor Savitsky’s Karakalpakstan State Art Museum procured an eclectic collection by avant-garde artists who remained true to their visions, in the face of overwhelming odds.  By the time of his death in 1984, Savitsky had amassed 40,000 forbbiden works of art which are still threatened to this day.

34th Cleveland International Film Festival

Last year, many of you enjoyed the fact that we highlighted the art-related movies at the 33rd CIFF, so we’re going to do that again this year!  You can view all of the films at their website here.

The Great Contemporary Art Bubble

Showtimes Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 11:50am and Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 2:15pm.  Please watch their website closer to the showtimes, because popular films often have additional show times added.

Who put the “con” in contemporary?  Art critic Ben Lewis wanted to know.  Aghast that the average rise in contemporary art values between 2003-2008 was 800%, Lewis spent one year investigating the art market.  In his hilarious and eye opening film, he strives to find out why.

CIFF tickets go on sale to members February 26, 2010 at 11am, and to non-members March 5, 2010 at 11am.

Please Help if You Can

55 homes were destroyed or damaged in a natural gas explosion on W. 83rd St. Councilman Matt Zone is looking for any kind of assistance for the many families who have suffered a loss (fortunately, no one was seriously injured - a miracle!). Please call his office at 216-939-1717 if you would like to donate money or help organize a benefit for the families. Thanks!

We hope that you can offer some assistance, as these homes were not far from the bustling new arts community on the west side.  Thanks to our good friend, Sandy Smith, for getting this information for us.
