Here’s a little snippet from this evening’s “How to Make it Last” seminar, presented by the Intermuseum Conservation Association. They gave the group a lot of information, and we’re happy that we can share a small part of it with those who frequent our YouTube videos.
Check out the video by clicking here. Check out the Intermuseum Conservation Association to find out more about them by clicking here.
Below is a picture of Nicole and Jamye from ICA, along with some of the people who attended. We were so excited to see people of such different backgrounds attending this event. We had our regular artist friends, new faces, someone from the downtown Cleveland library, someone from the museum, and a couple of people who arrange exhibits at the Toledo Zoo. A great crowd overall.

Confused about adhesives? Wondering about paint selection? What is an “archival” paper? Stretcher versus strainer? Not sure how to mount your work now so that it will still look great for your career retrospective? Two art conservators from ICA will discuss artists’ materials and how to use them. Plenty of time will be left for questions, so come prepared.
Presenting the workshop will be:
Jamye Jamison, Associate Paper Conservator

Starts at 6PM, great gifts & coupons given those who arrive first, but don’t let that put you off, if you can’t come until later, STILL COME!

It’s not too late to join in the record crowds at the 33rd Cleveland International Film Festival. Don’t let movies going on “stand-by” deter you. Most stand-bys actually get into their movies! No kidding! Buy your ticket online now, or if you do want to see a movie on stand-by, show up 1 hour before the showtime to get your voucher and line number.
Herb and Dorothy
You will fall in love with Herb and Dorothy Vogel and the art collection that they have amazzed since their 1st purchase in the 60s. The collected works now number thousands of pieces (enough to fill 5 moving vans when they transported it to the National Gallery in DC in 1992) and are, perhaps the most comprehensive representation of NY-generated modern & contemporary art in the world, especially incredible on the Vogel’s limited means. Herb was a postal worker who took art classes; Dorothy was a librarian. Both are “artist wannabes.” In 1960, they met at a dance & were married shortly afterward. On their honeymoon in DC, they took a trip to the National Gallery and learned about art. From there, their love of art and each other blossomed. The collection began. This is an impressive narrative of NYC art scene from the 1960s to present day.

In a Dream
Saturday, March 28, 2009 INAD28
Sunday, March 29, 2009 INAD29
Isaiah Zagar is an artist living in a dream. He is a 68year old creator of gigantic mosaics that cover his house and 40,000 sq ft of buildings in Philadelphia. This is an unusual documentary made by the artist’s son over the course of 7 years. It chronicles the musings & motivations of his sensitive, tortured father as he reveals the causes of his passions. Isaiah’s whife, Julia, to whom he’s been married to for over 30 years, is an affable and very patient woman who serves as her husband’s muse. She interprets him for the viewer, explaining how his work helps him escape reality. One of his fears is of losing his passion for creativity as well as for lovemaking. He then seeks to renew his lust for life with another woman. Just when his marriage to Julia seems like it’s unraveling, their older son has a drug-fueled breakdown caused by the departure of his fiance and baby. This is a brave, warm, painful, and wildly inventive representation of a creative, dysfunctional family.
In a Dream is part of the Nesnadny + Schwartz Documentary Film Competition and the Film is Art Series.
Tickets are available here. Some movies are going on stand-by, so NOW is the time to order. The festival starts on Friday, March 20th, 2009.

Art & Copy is another movie in the “Film is Art” series at the 33rd Cleveland International Film Festival.
Somewhere out there, giant satellites are about to launch into space to blanket the airwaves with commercial images. Art & Copy is a flim about the creative heads behind ad campaigns that have changed not how we view commodities, but also how we view ourselves. No matter what your perception is of advertising, the stories are intriguing. Groundbreaking ad executives pictures here come across as thoughtful artists with a genius for catching the spirit of the times before the world realizes what is happening. Mary Wells Lawrence, founding president of Wells Rich Greene and the woman behind memorable ad campaigns for Alka Seltzer, Ford, and New York City, describes the synergy between faceless corporations and the creative partners who present their images to the world. “Where’s the beef?” “got milk?” “Just do it” Somewhere out there, creatives types are coming up with messages promoting the next big thing. Get ready to receive them.

Above is a picture from the film, “Between the Folds,” directed by Vanessa Gould. It is featured in the Nesnadny + Schwartz Documentary Film Competition, the Film is Art Series, and Family Films Series. Spaces Gallery is planning a program that will follow the Saturday screening.
Who knew a movie about paper folding could be such a work of art? Filmmaker Vanessa Gould studied astrophysics & architecture at Columbia, which may begin her fascination with the engineering marvels accomplished by contemporary wizards of the age old art of origami. Gould fashioned a mesmerizingly beautiful paean to a number of visionaries who possess the dedication & ability to make incredible shapes out of a single sheet of paper. Following 10 artists & theoretical scientists from Cal Tech and MIT, she tells the story of curious beings who see potential where most do not. They use origami to experiment with movement and light, assail our concepts of realism, teach math to children at risk,a nd even design better air bags. Many have abandoned prestigious academic careers, and sometimes the respect of colleauges, to pursue their lives in paper. A unifying factor among them is their fond respect for the granddaddy of origamists, Akira Yoshizawa, creator of the modern repertoire of folding symbols.
